American college fraternities can be traced back to the secret student societies of colonial times. College fraternities use a Greek system where names are made up of 2 or 3 Greek letters. Usually a fraternity is funded at one collage and the colonized from there to other college campuses. The College of William and Mary in Virginia, was home to the first Greek letter society, Phi Beta Kappa in 1776. Phi Beta Kappa was a literary, debating and social club but over the years it became a honor society with chapters at most of the major colleges. In 1825 Kappa Alpha society became the first purely social fraternity. It was formed at Union Collage in New York to be soon followed by Sigma Phi and Delta Phi.
